Preparing for Adulthood

Preparing for Adulthood helps children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), along with their families, plan for a smooth move into adult life. The approach focuses on four key areas:

• Learning and work
• Independent living
• Health
• Being part of the community

Starting these conversations early, ideally before Year 9, makes transitions easier and more successful. With resources like the Preparation for Adulthood guide and services such as Living Well in North Yorkshire, families can find practical support to help young people aged 14–25 build confidence, independence, and fulfilling adult lives.
